Last week's mystery rattle from the rear end that I needed to get around to checking out turned into large, ginormous earth shuttering thunk that definitely sounded broken this morning. she didn't even make it out of the garage before I knew I wasn't going anywhere in the Sky today. So much for my introduction post. Now taking guesses on what might be broken!

More details?

Rear diff. GM probably didnt beef it up for the turbo version vs the NA version

That and at the time, GM wasn't really making good diffs. Just look at the first gen CTS-V.....

Spring jumping out of place after having cracked? I dunno, I'd have to have heard it.

The differential is my first guess as well. So far it's looking okay from first glances but now that I have the car secured (wood blocks, more jack stands, etc.) I'll crawl under see what is what.
Surprisingly the turbos have decent differentials! The only common issue with them is bad differential fluid from the factory (affected a number of Cadillacs at the time) and the turbo differentials cracking when people launch them too hard (user error).
I actually think the Kappa turbo differential came from one of the -V series Caddys. I know the base Kappas had a 4.10 open diff, base had an optional 3.91 LSD and the turbos had a 3.73 LSD. Not sure where all the parts came from in the big GM Mix-and-Match Bins.

Springs are looking okay at first glance but I will inspect them closer once under the car.

Since last week the rear has been making a rotational metal rattling noise from the rear. It happens at all speeds, at all times, except when the rear wheels are not turning. Sounds like something rattling back and forth as the rear wheels spin. It's not overly loud or terrible sounding, but it is a pretty annoying rattle that should not be coming from that area.
I have a feeling this mornings thud is unrelated to the rattle but was enough for me to get under the car. I went out to go to work, started the car and let it warm up. Compared to usual I had not backed the car the in the garage the previous night, so I went to put it into reverse to back out. So with the clutch in I did the usual Sky trick: locked me out of reverse (normal, the car never wants to go into reverse), so back into first, followed by second, then back into first. Tried putting into reverse and it slid right in. Double checked that the e-brake was off, started to pull back on the clutch and roll out of the garage. A large thud which shock the whole car emitted from the rear as it lurched and stopped. This was followed a split second by what sounded like metal cracking and breaking. Quickly threw the car back into neutral, got out, and pushed it forward the few feet.
Now I've got it jacked up, secured, and ready to go under to see what the damage is. So far the Sky has been almost completely issue free, so I am kind of worried my luck has run out.

Really sounds like diff to me in that case then, or possibly a clutch issue. It's probably something I'd have to hear in person to make a better guess. Good luck with it.
